This was the first real snus I tried after surviving on Camel Frost for several weeks (yuck). I was immediately overtaken by actual tobacco flavor (much unlike the American Camel snus). It was subtle of first mostly tasting of salt with a mild tobacco taste. Gradually the tobacco flavor intensified until it became full blown with hints of black pepper and bergamot. I was surprised at how quickly it became runny and how my spit was thick with black liquid. This was much different from the Camel which yielded a vague salival discoloration at best. I also was surprised by the nicotine buzz it gave me. This stuff is stout and takes a bit of getting used to but I can see why it's the gold standard. I had to take it out a couple of times because I was getting a little too buzzed and swallowing the spit gave me a bit of a stomach ache but I know it will be better once I'm used to it. This is a must try if you are new to snus. I can't wait till my try out box gets here so I can test some flavored snus.

I don't like this stuff. It's too salty and makes me drool like crazy. Plus it smells like cat piss or bathroom cleaner... I can't tell which one. Maybe I got a bad tin though so I plan on trying it one more time.

I'm usually more of a white portion person, because the salty snus drippings bother me after awhile. This, however, is one of the best original portions: the flavor isn't bitter or astringent, just citrusy, peppery, and smoky. The nicotine kick is average, but of course it absorbs a little faster than a white portion would. It's a classic. If you're new to Swedish snus, it is essential that you try this.

This is awesome Snus. I love the flavor strength. Good heavy tobacco taste.

I found this to be a great Snus, after a meal, it is a bit salty, but it has a fantastic flavor. I like the peppery taste (I do not taste the citrus). I will be ordering more of this snus. This was my first introduction to snus, I am a skoal guy myself and find snus is well fantastic. No more skoal for this guy.

Fantastic-- I can see why it's the gold standard for many snus users. It's exactly what I hoped for. Well balanced, full bodied tobacco flavor. I don't get much of the citrus flavor-- it is very subtle. For anyone who ever used Copenhagen American dip, imagine the best, freshest can you ever bought, with the perfect amount of moisture, now take that taste and improve it slightly... you've got General regular portion snus.

I am trying to quit smoking and decided to try Swedish snus after viewing the videos from Svandal(Confessions of a former smoker, quite smoking with snus 1-4) on YouTube. I tried the readily available USA version(Camel Frost snus) and although I liked the taste alot it didn't have the nicotine kick I wanted/needed. So I tried a few different varieties from Northerner. General Portion is one of them. Still salty and way too peppery for me but alot milder than SKRUF. And again, the way the snus is displayed in that fanned pattern is uber cool.

I have to update my review a little bit from yesterday. I have gotten some advice to let the portion sit on my tounge till it gets wet before putting it up in the lip. And doing that gave me much more flavor from all the snus i have.
So i really enjoyed this the second time the flavors were very good.
I believe this will be a very regular snus. Though i am going to try out the onyx in my next order so that my be my regular instead of this but right now I love the general taste.

I just got This in today my first experience with general. It is pretty good taste but very little taste. Matter of fact i get little taste out of pretty much any snus i have tried.
When the snus is in do you usally feel a little pressure against the snus i'm starting to think the way my gums are it makes to big a pocket and there for no pressure at all so no taste comes out. Not sure if that is it which is why i'm asking. Anybody else not get any flavor from any type of snus. Even the camel frost gives me next to no flavor.
But the little bit of peppery flavor i got i enjoyed however and would recommend this snus to anyone.

Here I am again, writing another review after only one more day of using this snus, and I have decided it's definitely one of my favorites. Though my complaint on the potency and quick emergence of the juices still stands, I have found that flavor is exceptional. If you really want a strong, spicy tobacco flavor, this is the snus for you. It is a snus with strong character and something I'll be ordering lots of, especially now that Northerner just opened a warehouse full of it in the US of A
- jsharp1, 04/17/2009 01:53:04
My first non-white portion snus, and I was quite pleased. The only reason I didn't rate it 5/5 is the juice was a little potent and the initial flavor was a little too spicy for my taste. I can see myself developing a taste for it though, and rewriting this review.
- jsharp1, 04/15/2009 05:09:03
I've said on many of by reviews of original portions, that I'm primarily a user of whites.
That's still true, but on my last order I was accidentally shipped these instead of the white portions. (NB: Northerner very quickly send me replacements at no extra charge for which I am very grateful.) But I wasn't going to let them go to waste, so I took these with my when I went to a conference during the week.
And I must say I'm starting to re-evaluate my position. The portions are more comfortable than whites and the flavour is just, well, better.
I do agree with a comment I read above that the juice from these can be a bit strong, and they do run quicker than the whites did, but this time round I was looking forward to the extra flavour that the juice bought.
When you combine this with the fact that I'm not too sure about the new shape whites, I think I may be putting a couple of these in my next order... on purpose!

This is another pretty straightforward snus. Like the Ettan it is mostly a salt & mild tobacco flavor, but with more of both than the Ettan. Overall a good "standard" snus, not as interesting or exciting as some other varieties, but it does the job.
- Gink, 04/10/2009 21:30:21
I'm relatively new to snus so I don't have a large number of varieties to compare but from the ones I have tried, this is one of my favorites. The biggest drawback to me buying more is the cost compared to other snus that tastes virtually the same for a better price like Level.
- steppinrazor, 03/26/2009 02:26:50
For some reason, I just don't like this compared to General loose. The taste doesn't seem quite like the loose to me, and is the only snus that burns when I swallow the juices.
- Murdoc, 03/25/2009 06:49:45
Lovely, classic General flavor of bergamot, lemon and peppery tobacco. I find the original portions run quite a bit more than the white versions but the orginal is a lot more flavorful. Pick one of the other, but either way, it's a must have.
- sychodelix, 03/22/2009 06:39:13
Very good snus! May take a little getting used to but definitely in my everyday rotation. Highly recommended!
- dustyewebb, 03/22/2009 03:56:46
Solid. It takes a bit to get used to if you're new to snus, but it's great for everyday use.
- krtownsend71, 03/19/2009 23:37:43
the general is popular for a good reason "it tastes great"
as people have aready stated it can taste abit salty at first but it does calm down quite quickly then backs it up with a citrus tobacco burst that really lastes
they say it all depends on how long you leave a snus in the mouth as to how long the strong flavour lasts but when i leave a general in for quite a time it still has that great tobacco taste even if you leave it in right up to the point you dont get any more nicotine and you need to put another in so for me its got staying power
and stranger still is the fact that over time my taste in snus has changed but i still enjoy that distinct general taste
- filmfreak, 03/17/2009 01:01:52
a classic for a reason, this snus is near perfect in my opinion, i found it to be subtle at first with the saltiness being the first flavor to surface followed by the citrus and tobacco ending with the peppery hints coming in all in balence and none being overwhelming for me a good all day option that was one of my first picks of snus and will remain in my top 3 go to.
- Connavar, 03/07/2009 20:58:04
Classic. This is the snus by which every other snus is judged.
- MrAbstracto, 03/06/2009 11:40:32
Like a lighter, less bold Ettan with a touch of mellow citrus. Probably my second favorite.
- voradork, 02/18/2009 02:02:47
Nice taste. Definitely strong with a nice bit of citrus - lemon - in there.
- dworthington, 02/17/2009 08:25:02
The gold standard of snus. A very good snus. For an everyday snus this is the one to get because it never gets old.
- Lb3ll, 02/16/2009 19:48:08
Like some if the other General mixes I found this one a bit too salty for my taste. Calms down after a bit however. I prefer the mellowness an character of Ettan for a straight tobacco flavor
