What We Have To Say

Introduced in 2008 and made by Swedish Match, General Wintergreen portion snus was the first Swedish snus to be created solely for the American market. Originally, General Wintergreen portion was only available in the U.S. at select tobacco shops but, due to its popularity, soon became available at online snus shops for worldwide delivery! General Wintergreen is classified as a White portion and does not go thru the additional wetting process at the end of production. Each can of General Wintergreen contains 24, one gram portions with 8 mg of Nicotine each. The material that Swedish Match uses for General Wintergreen is the same soft material they use in all their portions and is comfortable under the lip for over an hour and a half. General Wintergreen’s can made from a gray plastic with what looks like metallic flecks embedded in the plastic that gives the can the look of metal. The label is a foil and paper mix which also adds to the metal look and yes, the can does have a used portion lid in the top! Now, let’s take a look at the flavor and see why General Wintergreen was created for America.

If you were to ask an American that uses smokeless tobacco, or Dip, what his/her favorite flavor was, about 50% would respond Skoal Wintergreen. Ask them why and most of them would say the strong wintergreen flavor and the burn in the lip! Swedish Match did their homework with General Wintergreen portion when it came to mimicking Skoal Wintergreen. While there are some subtle flavor differences between the two, the base wintergreen flavor and burn that’s loved by Skoal users, is present in General Wintergreen! For those that haven’t experienced a wintergreen flavored snus, imagine the flavor a wintergreen Life Saver, take away a bit of the sweetness, add a hint of mild tobacco and salt and you have the flavor of General Wintergreen. We think this snus is perfect for the American smokeless tobacco user that wants to transition to Swedish snus but, we’ll let you decide!

Be sure to let us know what you think of General Wintergreen portion by leaving a review of your own. We’ll be looking forward to reading it!

Not being American I have never had anything Wintergreen flavour or at least branded Wintergreen Flavour. So I was curious. I just finished my first can. My verdict, I like it. Reminds me of the taste of mouth wash (listerine) I agree with Silverthrill's comment this is great snus to use after a meal. Goes well with soda but is not so good with Tea or Coffee. I am probably going to keep some in my freezer for now and again use. I dont taste much tobacco in this snus, and I get about 1 hour out of portion.

I have an affinity for wintergreen flavored tobacco. When I first started ordering snus, I was very surprised that there weren't more minty varieties out there, being from America and almost exclusively seeing wintergreen dip being sold. Upon trying this snus, I came to two conclusions: I like it better than Catch, and it makes perfect sense that this would be sold almost exclusively in America. Many American tobacco users in general (and dip users specifically) seem to dislike being reminded that they have ground tobacco leaf in their mouth. The wintergreen flavor is so popular over here for that very reason. General Wintergreen makes me think of this every time I pop a portion. Initially the flavor is very strong. If you let the portion sit on your tongue for too long it feels like tootpaste on your skin. After some time, however, the traditional General flavors start to come out and balance themselves well with the wintergreen, reminding you that no, this is not gum, and yes, it's got tobacco in it. The smell is so overpowering I would almost call it a stench because it reminds me so much of American dip. I do appreciate how it freshens my breath a bit, however. In short, I will order this snus probably every time (with a can of Catch...I still love it) because I appreciate its balance and flavor, but I won't use it constantly because I'll miss the stronger flavor of tobacco which regular portions offer. This is the perfect Snus for American sale because it may just get smokeless tobacco users who are put off by the flavor of snus to try it out, hopefully weening them off an inferior (and more lethal) product. Cheers to General, for wowing me again.

My 2 cans to test out arrived today. This is my first experience of any wintergreen flavour opened the tin an immediately thought the aroma of wintergreen is like the mouthwash we get here in the UK. However that is no bad thing. Quite refreshing to use. I am used to sterk portions and loose so cant really taste any tobacco in this snus. I still think it is nice and a refreshing change from traditional flavours. This wont be a regular snus for me but may use it when I go out instead of using gum to refresh my mouth.

I am not as excited of this product and personally will only use it on occasion. Although I do feel that this type of snus does have a good strong aroma and a nice wintergreen flavor, it just reminds me too much of the american products that are not too my liking. If it wasn't for the fact that I ran out of my supply a few weeks ago and found a specialty shop in Los Angeles that carries the US version of snus, I would never had tried this flavor. Not to mention that the colour of green on the label is so subtle, in bad store lighting, that if you don't read the bottom label you may be buying the wrong type and end up being very shocked that this is may not really be a snus product...or maybe I was too shocked/ excited to find a store in Los Angeles that carries snus and I grabbed the first can in front of me with a huge grin. It is probably the closest to what we Americans are force to endure and will bridge the gap to the two markets but I still prefer the classic General brands from Strong to white to General Onyx. If you like the wintergreen flavor, this is the product you should try. Overall comments: the good: Clean tasting nice aroma excellent for an after meal finish works well with ice water and fruit the bad: reminds me of a piece of gum or just after brushing my teeth too strong of wintergreen to work with wine or beer the whatever: not an all day product, I find it best to use it once in awhile to give your taste buds a burst from the normal snus. Enjoy it. just my two cents.
- silverthrill, 05/22/2009 08:22:06

This one's OK. The wintergreen is subtle, and it tones down the tobacco flavor nicely. I don't think it'll be a regular, but I can obtain it locally, so it might be a standby if I fall behind on ordering online.

I actually purchased 5 tins of this from the US warehouse because I was running low on my Granit Maxi and didn't want to run out before my order from Sweeden came in. Since the US warehouse is in Pennsylvania and I'm in Boston, MA it gets here quick. I have never used White portion before and I usually use General Maxi but I was not disappointed by this product. It is very good. The wintergreen smell may be strong but the taste is subtle which I like a lot. I wil definetly order more of this for whenn I am at work and do not want people to notice the obvious Maxi portion in my mouth. The nicotine hit is decent - but of course I am accustomed to portions containing 12+ mgs so I can't complain. I don't think this will become my regular brand but it is a good snus and it is still far superior to any of the US smokeless junk out there. The convenicne of being able to have it shipped from PA was great too. I have learned my lesson and right now am stocking up on my favorites from Sweden so I don't have to make another emergency order fromPA. But it is nice to know that the US ware house is there juist in case you are running low and can't wait a week for the good stuff from Swedent o make it through Customs. Thanks again Northerner you have given me a great alternative to both smoking and dipping Kodiak.

Got my first can of General Wintergreen a few days ago. Was a bit dubious about it at first, but now it is one of my favourites. A lovely taste, not too overpowering. All in all a great snus.

Well...Swedish Match did way, way too well of a job of making this smell and taste just like American wintergreen. They did so well that I don't like this stuff. Before switching to snus full time, about 2 years ago, I had dipped wintergreen American snuff for about 4 years. Now that I've been gladly away from dip for so long and grown very fond of snus tobacco-y, salty flavor(Luckies, yum) this Gen wintergreen just reminds me way too much of my former habit. This, however, is the PERFECT gateway snus for former dippers that enjoyed wintergreen. Good job Swedish Match, it's just not for me.
- victoryredchevy, 05/01/2009 17:50:09

Swedish Match did way too good of a job on this stuff. So much of a good job, that I can't bring myself to like this stuff. I dipped for almost 5 years before switching to snus full time about 2 years ago. This stuff smells and tastes exactly like american wintergreen snuff to me. This is a great gateway snus for those just switching over, especially a wintergreen dipper. I've gotten away from the smell and taste of wintergreen. This stuff just reminds me of dip. Which, is obviously the point. Just not the flavor for me.
- victoryredchevy, 04/30/2009 23:41:09

These are ridiculously good. At first I was a little worried: I thought that by adopting the traditional wintergreen flavor for the US market, General would go ahead and add all the sugar that Americans are used to. Fortunately, I was wrong. The portions have a strong herbal aroma, but the taste is mild and not at all too sweet. They are cool, but not as minty as Catch Eucalyptus. Once the menthol fades, the portions transition to the salt-and-smoke taste General is known for. I recommend these for Americans and Swedes alike. If only they came in that neat star formation!
- petermiller, 04/30/2009 06:59:44

All these comments have it exactly right. For anyone who has had and liked the flavor of Skoal wintergreen, this is it, but with a higher quality tobacco flavor from the General.
- chriskmiles, 04/28/2009 04:51:46

Absolutely the best wintergreen taste i have ever had, lasts a long time as well and is really moist when you first open the can. Swedish Match never dissapoints. Snus on......And enjoy!
- dsim67, 04/26/2009 18:07:19

I am trying to quit smoking and decided to try Swedish snus after viewing the videos from Svandal(Confessions of a former smoker, quite smoking with snus 1-4) on YouTube. I tried the readily available USA version(Camel Frost snus) and although I liked the taste alot it didn't have the nicotine kick I wanted/needed. So I tried a few different varieties from Northerner. General White Portion Wintergreen was one of them. Not bad at all. Missed the way the snus is displayed in that fanned pattern like in other General flavors. The taste was ok but the bags kept breaking on me. I looked like an inbred mountain man half of the time due to the bag breaking and all of the black snus specs in my mouth. Going to try Jakobssons Ice Fruit
- hightechjunkie, 04/25/2009 06:05:55

This was one of my first of 3 cans of snus, Wintergreen has a good burn and a nice nicotine kick and overall I'm Happy with this product. Not sure why salt is in all general snus does this add to the kick or just for taste? would like to find a low or no sodium snus!
- email4paulp, 04/24/2009 12:06:13

If you are a fan of wintergreen and General Snus, you Will enjoy this product. I found that the strong wintergreen flavor eased quite nicely into the spicy, citrus flavor that is distinctly General.
- mkrb2, 04/20/2009 06:55:59

I just got my first can of this in yesterday. First impression was the smell omg it smelled just like skoal wintergreen dip. Which is the point of it i believe. I couldn't believe the resemblance. I have not dipped in like 12 years but i knew the smell right away. than i put the portion in and for the first time ever i got that burn feeling from snus no other portion has given me a burn what so ever. Took about 5 to 10 minutes than the taste started coming and was very pleasant. I can say i enjoy this snus very much The taste is good and finally one i can give to my co worker who dips to try and get him to switch. He should like it. I would recommend this snus to anyone who likes wintergreen flavor or who is used to dipping American smokeless tobacco.
- Segyn88, 04/19/2009 18:24:22

I tried a free sample of this snus about a week ago and loved it. It smells just like the American wintergreen flavored dip, a smell that's great to me. The flavor is very strong and the portions lasts a long time. If you like wintergreen this is a must try. For those who are trying snus, but can't get used to the typical Swedish snus flavor this would be a great crossover snus. 5 out of 5 stars for me.
- thecet1990, 04/19/2009 00:05:34

It's been literally years that I have been waiting for a wintergreen flavoured snus. Would they get it right or would it be a poor copy of the American dip I am accustomed to? I am very pleased to say this snus does not disappoint. They got the authentic American wintergreen taste just right. It's hard to explain but the flavour has a more subtle and refined taste. This snus is perfect for anybody who wants to switch to authentic Swedish snus but still desires the American style flavour. For the complete snus novice who wonders what American brand this can be compared to, I would say Skoal Bandits although the General wintergreen gives a slightly better nicotine kick. I am hoping this brand is popular and perhaps we will then one day see Maxi (large portion) portions. General Wintergreen Maxi Stark portions. If they ever make that I will never use anything else Until then, give this fine snus a try.
- dmck, 04/17/2009 16:10:21

General Wintergreen is my Go To Snus right now! Great flavor and not to salty! A must for anyone wanting to switch from American dip to Snus
- timbpro77, 04/16/2009 23:29:06

Whew, this stuff is minty fresh! Way too strong for me personally, but it seems a good choice for those seeking a flavor that will drown out the standard salt & tobacco snus flavors. Good for those switching from sugary american flavored tobaccos, or those new to snus and maybe struggling with the flavors of some of the more standard snus. But as someone who loves the subtle sweetness of Roda Lacket, or strong salt and tobacco flavors, this snus is not for me.
- Gink, 04/10/2009 21:34:28

General Loose and General Wintergreen are going to become the only snus I buy in rolls. The wintergreen flavor is mild, and not overpowering or too sweet. It's an extremely pleasant portion.
